The Christian Armor: The Breastplate of Righteousness

What is this “breastplate of righteousness” that Paul mentions in Ephesians 6:14? Why should we put on this armor of “righteousness” and how?

Jesus Christ is the Righteous One who did not only live righteously to make us righteous before God by justification. By his Spirit, he also sanctifies and forms us into his likeness as those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. And so to grow and persevere in our spiritual battle as Christians, we are called to cultivate and exercise righteousness in everything that we do.
